Remember, I am just letting you know what I recommend and I am not expecting you to do all of this on your own. Which those system requirements can be seen here. If for some reason you can not upgrade to the most recent, you should be at least able to upgrade to Mac OS 10.11 El Capitan. In order to figure this out you can either let me know the serial number or model and year of your mac or you can reference here for the system requirements your current mac would need to run the most recent MacOS which is 10.13 High Sierra.

So basically what I recommend is to make sure your mac can upgrade and how far it can upgrade. As far as your issue trying to use the 'direct cable' to transfer your photos from your iphone 8, could be an entirely separate issue but can be possibly fixed by the MacOS upgrade as discussed before. The newer MacOS version and the new photos app will make it easier for you to use your photos with all your Apple devices. iPhoto is no longer supported by Apple as they have discontinued iphoto and have moved on to 'photos app'.

Upgrading the MacOS version will also give you the newest or newer version of the mac's 'photo app'. I say that because I would need a little more info from your mac to make sure how high of MacOS version your mac is compatible with. First I would recommend upgrading your MacOS from 10.9 to as high as you can go.
